The biography:
GIOVANNI GUALBERTO BRUNETTI was probably born in Pisa in about 1730 into a family of musicians. His father, Antonio, had been since 1736, the organist and kappelmeister of the cathedral there. The often used Christian names of Antonio and Giovanni Gualberto in the complicated ramifications of the Brunetti family tree make the drawing up of single biographies and the process of attribution particularly difficult. After the death of Giovanni Maria Clari in 1754, Giovanni Gualberto took over the post of Cathedral kappelmeister (one of the Lamentations for Holy Week is dated 1756) which he maintained until 1766. Thank only to a prodigious output on the part of Clari and Brunetti were the Cathedral archives replenished with new compositions for each sacred office after the flooding of the River Arno had completely destroyed the previous precious collection. There are more than four hundred manuscripts still today at Pisa written by Giovanni Gualberto, an impressive collection which includes masses, parts of masses, antiphonies, hymns, litanies, motets, psalms, in one or more vocal parts and both for voices alone or accompanied.
