The biography:
Born in Pisa in 1677, Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari gained his initial grounding in musical education from his father, a violinist originally from Rome who was employed in the service of the chapel of the Cavalieri di S. Stefano in Pisa. Clari also studied (??) with Teofilio Macchetti, kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Pisa, before completing his studies of counterpoint in Bologna in the years between 1691 and 1695 under the guidance of Giovan Paolo Colonna who was then the kapellmeister at S. Petronio.
In 1695 when he was only seventeen years old his first work “Il Savio Delirante” was staged with great success in Bologna, this acting as a passport for his admission to the “Accademia filarmonica” where he was accepted as a composer in 1697.
Biographical detail is missing up to 1703 at which date we find him kapellmeister at the cathedral of Pistoia thanks to the influence of Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici, the marvellous supporter and patron of the arts.
