The biography:
Giulio Caccini was born in Tivoli or Rome around 1550. Little is known about his early musical education; he studied voice, lute and harp under Giovanni Animuccia and Scipione dalla Palla and during the years 1564-1565 he was a member of the Giulia Chapel (Cappella Giulia) in Rome. Shortly after he moved to Florence where, thanks to his singing skills he was admitted to the Accademia which in the years 1575 to 1582 convened in Giovanni Bardi’s palace, the so-called Camerata fiorentina or Camerata Bardi. In the musical field discussions were held on the power of music to move the soul (affetti), citing the example of the Greek tragedies which were supposed to have been sung in the simplest of monodic styles and capable of stimulating very deep and profound emotion that was contrasted with counterpoint, this latter considered as being excessively artificial. Caccini partially put into effect the ideals advanced by the Camerata in searching for a mode of composition that was capable of communicating the varied sentiments that poetic texts inspired.
