The biography:
Born in Pistoia, 11° October 1738, he began his musical studies under the guidance of his father who was the organist of the Church of the Holy Trinity and also the Church of St. Mary the Humble (Santissima Trinità Santa Maria dell’Umiltà). His brother Domenico, his elder by five years, had already studied music with good results, but the young Filippo Maria showed such extraordinary talent that his father decided to send him to study under Tommaso Giacomelli, the leading organist of his day in Pistoia. In 1747, when he was nine, his father died, but this did not impede his furthering his musical education. His talent increased from year to year as did his fame, so much so that he was invited to play the organs of the most important churches of Pistoia, as, for example, the Jesuit church which housed the precious instrument made by the Flemish builder, Guglielmo (Wilhelm?) Hermans. Encouraged by these successes, in 1756 Filippo moved to Bologna to study under Father Giovanni Battista Martini.
