The biography:
“The spiritual musical pleasures of an eccentric knight” The first and foremost requisite to becoming one of the knights of the Sacred Military Naval Order of the Knights of St. Stephen created by the archduke of Tuscany in 1561 was to be four fourths noble. The principal aim of the order was that of the fight against the unfaithful carried out at sea. The wonderful palace at Pisa (now housing the Scuola Normale Superiore) and the adjoining church of St Stephen de’ Cavalieri was chosen as being the headquarters of the order. It was for this church, in 1737, that the Sienese knight, Azzolino Bernardino Della Ciaia (1671-1755) designed and built an organ that was to become famous in Europe. A kaleidoscopic monstrum of the Italian Italian organ making scene having as it did, five manuals plus an additional one for the “saltero”, it was the end result of a complicated operation of assembly incorporating already existing elements – an intervention which saw the collaboration of Neapolitan, Roman and Tuscan organ builders.
